... is over! yaaaaaay! i can park where i want to park now! i can go back to my spin class! i don't have to worry about going off on some plain-clothes secret service person and getting arrested! life is good again! sigh... i'm finally exhaling... =] first i'm gonna go over my take on the crap that was "belmont debate 08" and then, "in all candor," as tom "time to buck up" brokaw would put it, i'm going to give my take on that damn debate.
belmont has been preparing for this debate since last semester... they paved 15th ave (just on the belmont side). they built media tents on our soccer field (although it's not like we need it any way, since we stole rose park...). they drilled holes and put up a fence around the campus. they kicked people out of offices so they could use them. they took over the school and then told the students that we'd only get to go to this debate if the space became available. all this chaos, all this money spent, for 90 minutes of bullshit rhetoric. my tax dollars/tuition was spent very well, wouldn't you agree?
i fell asleep on the debate. i watched it on cnn and they had the little meter thingy on the bottom the measured reactions of undecided voters in ohio (battleground state, i know, but still pretty random, if i do say so myself) and then the circle things framing the screen with points from political analysts... um... i don't know about you, but i could have definitely done without both of those. first of all... anyone who is an "undecided voter" at this point is lying. no, no, no... i'm not trying to hear that shit. with less than a month to go before the election, THIS election, you know which way you're going. 2nd... i don't need to see the reactions of other people on a little bar graph thingy... i have my own reactions and that of the people/person i'm watching with.
THIRD, those little circles were annoying... for one, i couldn't figure out why these people were giving the dudes points in the first place. i mean... there were things they said that made sense, but NOTHING resonated... i can't remember a single quote. barack gave an actual answer maybe 55% of the time. mccain kept saying "my friend" like we were sitting around drinking and talking politics. and that castellanos person gave entirely too many points away... you look at his little square and he's got 15 for mccain and 24 for obama and you look at the rest and they're still in single digits. what did he see? was he drunk???
moving on... i thought this was supposed to be town hall debate... um... what were there? like 5 questions from the audience? tom brokaw asked questions and pulled some from the internet, but... that's not what a town hall meeting is supposed to be like. all those people sitting up there for NOTHING, to make it seem like they were gonna do it right... man, we were duped. they should have had it set up like the youtube debates... that would have been hella effective right now... it would have had a bigger impact than it did when they first did it.
all in all, it's great that belmont was apart of history and great that i experienced it with them. this is something i'll never forget regardless of the ultimate conclusion. there were some kinks and inconveniences. perhaps things will be done a little better in 4 years... =]
