r.i.p. friendship, the US is screwed, i hate my job and other snippets from my WEEK

hello all... a note to those of you who read the blog, are google users, but don't have blogger: i have just made it possible for you to comment too...=] anywho, i spent most of the week in the bed, missed 4 days of work and therefore skipped every blogging opportunity. lots happened this week... i've had many blog-worthy thoughts... i'll try to summarize my week the best i can, "snippets..." style. i'm done with friendship... that might sound harsh, but i think i am. in the span of a week, i've deleted both my myspace and facebook. i deemed the latter semi useful when i needed it to get someone's contact info. in order for my brain to accept that i was going to continue to indulge in this "social networking tool," i cut my friends list down from around 276 to 93. i'm no longer interested in friendship. i thought i had real friends but we're not on the same page. i let the belief that i had all the friends i need keep everyone else a...

man frickin facebook sucks

i've decided to go on facebook hiatus. basically i'm tired of it. i'm only on facebook in order to keep in touch with people i can't see regularly. there are a few people i do see regularly and we're friends on facebook because, well... with the way facebook has taken over our society, it would be awkward not to have your actual friends as facebook friends. lately i have started noticing people on facebook that i do not care about. it seems that we're just friends on facebook because we have met at some point in life. aside from the "celebrities," who i may or may not meet, i have people i knew in elementary, middle, and high school with whom i had very little interaction. noticing these people has come to mean learning things about people that i'd rather not know. some valuable lessons i've learned from facebook: people tell you "happy birthday" because they think they have to i've seen that getting a reminder of someone's ...

bored at work. go read these. is it 6:30 yet?

i'm at work. bored. out. of. my. mind. i'm sure there's stuff i could be doing, but instead i've been sitting here thinking about my boredom... i've been perusing blog sites, playing with wordle , listen to my iPod, and answering some calls. the following are some items, articles, things, whatever that you should go look at, read, examine if you're bored and could use some brain fuel. The Basis of Black Power: a SNCC position paper The Revolution Will Not Be Televised What Should White People Do? Pot Psychology What the fuck are we doing to our little girls??? I told you Kwame doesn't need to go to the convention Apparently People Aren't Consummating Marriages Anymore I'm nothing but a sandcastle; Baby, don't blow me away Kanye Appreciates Great Architecture DMX Actually Needs Help, Yall Insert Funny Shit Joke Here Offensive? I've been here since 10. I'm tired... and it's nowhere near 6:30. damn i'm ready to go. =[ OH! i stuck my...

going on

periodically a song comes along that's sooooo good to me that i feel like either they're singing to me or they wrote it while reading my mind. i've been meaning to point out the greatness in this song for a while. and usually i just post the lyrics but this song deserves much more. it's talking to me. i feel it. i have felt it for so long. i'll explain. I've seen it with my own eyes How we're gettin otherwise Without the luxury of leavin The touch and feeling of free is Untangible technically Something you've got to believe in Connect the cause and effect One foot in front of the next This is the start of a journey. And my mind is already gone And though there are other unknowns Somehow this doesn't concern me. for a while i tried to figure out why i'm in college - other than the fact that my mother told me i had to be. when even she said, "nicole, you're grown. i don't care what path you choose," i was a little lost. it came to...

political snippets from my day

most mornings i wake up and watch american morning on cnn. it's "the most news in the morning" they say... i mean... really they just repeat the same news over and over again, but hey, it's a valuable part of my day. i usually listen to the tom joyner morning show on my way to work. and then when i get here, i go and read the news on cnn.com. they have the political ticker and lately, since they're pro-black these days, they've been linking to stories on essence.com. that routine led me to my snippets... usually my snippets are random, cover a wide range of subjects, and follow my entire day. today you just get politics. i can't take anymore. all this frowning is going to give me wrinkles... by 2042 minorities will be the majority the morning this story on american morning caught my ear and made me sit and listen. the main idea is that when taken all together, the number of minorities in america will be more than the number of white people in america. 3 t...

i still love OAKLAND

so... last week marcel over at pourtout pancakes wrote a blog about why he left new york citing a poster a florida marlins fan made that said, "if new york is soooo great... MOVE BACK." basically it annoys him when people who aren't from the south come to the south and talk about how great their hometown is compared to the south. he goes on to talk about how much better than his hometown the south happens to be. i am from OAKLAND, though i am in the south and have been since 2000. i can't knock marcel for feeling the way he does about new york but i have to disagree... i STILL fucks with my hometown... only one thing about marcel's post bothered me, but i'll get back to that in a sec. i just want to point out 2 main things first. to contrast new york with the south, marcel writes: I loved being out in nature, sitting in the back yard, just relaxing. It was so different then New York, where there was so much stress. The biggest difference was the peo...

driving miss daisy

last night i watched driving miss daisy for the first time in my life. i have avoided this movie for many reasons. as most of us know, it is the story of a white woman and her black chaffeur over the course of about 25 years in atlanta, ga. the movie was first a play written by a jewish american who grew up in the south and wrote other plays about jews in atlanta based on things he'd seen. i saw the movie on cmt and the character who "presented" this movie called it an "oscar-winning, southern classic." i can imagine the types of things going through a southerner's head while watching this movie ("that hoke was such a good nigger to miss daisy," etc...) and that's mostly why i've avoided watching it. alas, i was bored. project runway was off and james wasn't home yet. miss daisy is an old widow who lives with her black maid (named idella, played by none other than esther rolle). she crashes her car because, well... because she's he...

r.i.p. bernie mac

i was going to blog about something else today, but then i heard this news. bernie mac passed away this morning from complications from pneumonia. in addition to the loss of life, this is especially sad news because he was only 50. this news shocks me almost as much as the news of aaliyah's death in 2001. bernie mac was someone i just assumed would be around forever. few people have that talent and it's super jarring when it's lost. it would be selfish for me to blog about my lost. i didn't know him personally. my heart goes out to his family. i will spend the rest of my day in solemn tribute to bernie mac, laughing and enjoying life the way i know he did. r.i.p.
