black in america

last week i blogged about the first half of the black in america series. while i was watching that one, i was prepared to be skeptical. i just knew i'd have some kind of commentary. my blog was more like my notes with very little commentary but that was ok. when i watched the second half, "the black man," i was thoroughly disappointed. i started off taking notes, but then i got kinda unhappy with it and just watched. i've had almost a week to soak everything in and formulate an intelligent opinion instead of just a rant. first, my initial criticism about the show was that: a.) cnn is only putting this on because obama is running for president - i mean they don't even do this shit during black history month and we know how much white people love to celebrate and highlight black history month [but that's another blog...] b.) i'm tired of "creating a dialogue." i didn't want to watch a bunch of people say "black is beautiful," and i s...

the dark knight was the shit!

last night i went to see the dark knight in imax. it was fricking amazing. the whole imax experience was great too. huge screen and surround sound you can feel in your chest? amazing. anywho... the movie was great... without giving anything away, i will say that it was too long though. i felt like most of the end should have been saved for the next installment. pretty much everything after harvey dent turns into two face. however, even those scenes were good. although the rest of this post will be dedicated to heath ledger, he wasn't the only great part of this movie. i have grown to really like christian bale as early batman. at first i couldn't see him as batman because i kept seeing him as patrick bateman. also, james pointed out that this set of batman movies seems more real (as opposed to the almost cartoonish ones of the nineties). i agree. the movie was shot really well too. it was beautiful. and all of the stunts were really good. all its greatness made me miss heath l...

The Gospel of Nicole

my last semester in school i took a class on the new testament. while we were learning about gospels, we were told to write a gospel about ourselves. i wasn't sure how to approach the assignment and the thought of mimicking the bible seemed sacrilegious. anywho, while deleting some files i came across my gospel and it made me chuckle a little... enjoy. =] Twenty-one years have passed in the life of Nicole, born of Gail and LaMonte. Siblings from Gail are Daryl and Jeremy; from LaMonte are Kaylin and Monte. She is without a spouse or children. She has always been destined for greatness. Instead of napping during preschool, Nicole preferred to read. On the first day the teacher demanded that she go to sleep after lunch. Nicole refused, "Gaining knowledge from this book is far more important than being well-rested for recess." Impressed, the teacher remarked, "Nicole is such a smart child, far beyond her years. She is destined for greatness." Nicole was aged fo...

more where that came from...

all i have to say is i just wanna... cut his n_ts off... =] When Fox News aired the clip of civil right activist Jesse Jackson saying that he wanted to castrate Barack Obama, the media pounced on the major gaffe, forcing Jackson to repeatedly apologize the Illinois senator and his family. Now it’s being revealed that Reverend Jackson made potentially more damaging remarks in his caught-on-tape moment of shame. Though the actual footage has not circulated, transcripts of the illicit conversation have been leaked and show Jackson to have used the “n-word.” According to TVNewser.com, Jackson said, “Barack…he’s talking down to black people…telling niggas how to behave.” Fox had edited out the racial slur in its broadcast. Jackson, who thought his mic was off while he made the comments, should suffer even more public disgrace with this new revelation. The reverend is known for crusading again the use of the so-called n-word and this incident shows gross hypocrisy. The former civil rights ic...

wtf is a soulmate, anyway?

i had a really good weekend and it has led me to consider what terms like "soulmate" and "the one" really entail. this isn't a subject that i haven't already visited. in fact, i thought i had found mine. i was thinking about a convo i had with the hubby sasha about how you know that a man is the one. i said that i didn't know exactly but i thought my bf was the one because he knew me and accepted me. at the time he was the only male person i'd been involved with who i thought did that. in light of the way my current relationship is going and how that one ended, i have to question that definition. i wrote a blog a while ago about the definition of love and how it has changed for me every time i thought i was in it. i feel like that's what this whole "soulmate" concept is doing. obviously that boyfriend was not the one. and after appraising the relationship i'm not sure how i could have thought that. we've known each other since ...

what jesse jackson shows us about being black in america

so... jesse jackson wants to cut Barack Obama's nuts off. perhaps i should be offended that these comments about the first black human being to have a viable chance at the presidency "slipped" out of the mouth of a so called black leader, whose own attempt at the presidency, coincidentally, wasn't so viable. hmmm... nope. that's not what this feeling is. Maybe I should just agree with jessie. i mean... just who does this "elitist" black man (who just so happened to have grown up without his father and still managed to graduate magna cum laude from Harvard Law) think he is going to black churches telling black people to be moral and take responsibility for themselves? bill cosby? naaah... i don't feel that way either. in a nutshell, i am ashamed of how our so called black leaders have been acting. jesse does not speak for the black people that i know but unfortunately he does show a side of "what it's like to be black in america" that yo...
