I have to review this because I love the Clipse. I was a little nervous about it because I’m always weary when a part of a unit goes out on his or her own. But I didn't think it would be terrible... Let's see how it went...
Intro: Just a plain Scarface clip. Not too impressive.
My God (prod. Hitboy): The beat builds too slowly and it's not as aggressive as I want it to be.
I Still Wanna (prod. Inkredibles): I feel like I've heard this song before. It has the same Lex Lugar tings that I'm not fond of.
Money on My Mind Freestyle: I don't really have a comment on it. I just don't like it. I skip it too soon.
Feeling Myself (feat. Kevin Cossum, prod. the Bizness): There's nothing particularly wrong with this. It's cool. But if I'm going to be feeling myself… I kinda want to do it to Mac Dre.
Blow/Funk Flex Freestyle (prod. Unknown): I guess it's cool. It sounds like the rest of them at this point. I think it's interesting that he doesn't know who the producer is. It's really good for that producer, though. It's like winning the lottery.
Cook it Down Freestyle: I'm bored before I even hear it. The beat has been used and nothing is particularly special about it here. I'm not in an "I sell coke" mood anymore. And the auto tune? Why?
Open Your Eyes (prod. Nottz): Really like the Queen sample. It's my favorite so far. Kinda sad it took 8 songs to get here… =[
Can I Live Freestyle: It's cool I guess. *shrug*
Raid (feat. 50 Cent, prod. the Neptunes): I like this a lot. But that's almost a given. It's produced by the Neptunes.
Touch It (feat/prod. Kanye West): I like this too. It's really cute, very Kanye.
Speakers Goin Hammer Freestyle: I like Pusha on this beat, but Souja Boy's "bammer bammer bammer" still annoys the hell out of me.
Alone in Vegas (prod. Nottz): This is a really good way to end it. I like the beat. It sounded really nice in my car.
I feel like there's something missing here. A lot of this is the same old weight and money shit. The rest is Till the Casket Drops type maturity. It leaves me feeling like I've heard this before. And I'm not impressed. Sans Malice and Pharrell, this feels kind of lonely to me. Road to Till the Casket Drops was a better mixtape and I didn't even like it.
Overall, it meets the "at least 3 good tracks" requirement, but just barely. Those 3 tracks have a Neptunes beat, a Kanye beat, and a Queen sample. If they sucked, something would be terribly wrong with the world. This skip factor is way too high. It took me 8 songs to get to one I like -- not one I can tolerate; one I like. That's unacceptable for me considering that I love the intro on Lord Willin', "We Got it For Cheap," and "Freedom."
I give it 3 out of 5 stars. Maybe it'll grow on me. My fingers are crossed for a hella good Clipse album in the near future.
