I am the dumbest person I know. No. I am. Save your consolation for someone else... So... I went to San Francisco State University in 2004. Everything was cool except the being 2,000 miles from my mother and not being able to afford ANYthing except school. In 2006 I decided to move back to Nashville and transfer to Belmont University. Now... This is a great example of my stupidity. You see, I made the decision to go to SFSU because I had to go back to the Bay Area and they were the first school that sent an acceptance letter. I knew that was a bad method of choosing but guess what I did in 2006. Yup. I had to be back in school and it was looking like no school would accept me for the spring term and then Belmont came through. Sigh...
The transfer to Belmont wasn't that bad. Except... Instead of coming in with junior standing, which is where I would've been at SFSU, I came in as a sophomore. Two years left turned into three years left. But that wasn't the worst part. Another example of my stupidity... When I went to SFSU, my parents were contributing and then they stopped. I ended up not only having move off campus and find a place to live in the expensive ass city of San Francisco, but I eventually left SFSU with a $5,000 debt for a housing bill that went unpaid. When I got here, they said they could contribute and then they stopped. Though this had happened before, I still didn't have a real contingency plan in case my parents money stopped again. Real smart...
This financial failure led to being out of school for entire semesters. In total I've taken 3 semesters off and one half time. Although I've been dealing with college for 5 years now, it would appear that I've only been a student for 3. If I were to continue at Belmont, I would only have 3 semesters left in order to graduate. But that's not financially feasible. Another transfer is the only solution... which leads me to another example of my stupidity. When I first got back my grandmother (who was THOROUGHLY disappointed that I didn't go to Vandy right out of high school because her generation wouldn't have even been given that opportunity...) quietly suggested Tennessee State. It's cheap. It's local. I went to high school here and I had been back in Nashville long enough to be eligible for in-state tuition. But I was lazy. Belmont said yes and I'd already sent them some money. Do you know where I'm going now, since it makes so much more financial sense? Yeah...
Since I'm a bit of a nerd (despite being so stupid...) I'm incredibly organized and I have explored many options and scenarios regarding this transfer. I have 3 separate plans. I've written out everything I've done every semester since Fall 2004 to see how it would put me in the best positron to graduate. I thought I ran into trouble because I have a balance at Belmont that won't be paid until August so they won't release my transcript. But I made a very important and startling discovery. I don't need my Belmont transcript. You read that correctly... Most of my SFSU hours transfer to TSU. TWO classes from Belmont transfer to TSU maybe. (One for sure... Not so sure about the other.) Everything else would be elective. But get this. With those electives, I have 3 semesters left. Without the electives, I have 4. Belmont makes a difference of ONE semester and I was there for 2 years. Dude... my stupidity is showing again... if I had just gone to TSU in 2006 when I got back, I'd probably be done by now. Foot, meet Nicole's ass...
OK... so... maybe I'm not TOTALLY dumb... Of course... I've learned a whole lot. And my Belmont detour was not all bad. I was clearly meant to take this detour. I met some of the greatest people on Earth. Life-long, down-ass, always-be-there type people. I joined to greatest sorority on Earth. You've never seen one like it and you never will... =] I had some of the most, uh... interesting conversations I've ever had with white people. I grew up. And... I can't really be mad at my progress... Still... If only I wasn't so stupid, maybe I could've learned these lessons AND earned a degree at the same time...
