last time i blogged i had a link to a bossip story about sharri henry. apparently, she was in a relationship with jaguars wide receiver, dennis northcutt, became pregnant, refused to terminate, and got beat for it while she was pregnant. girlfriends and wives getting beat by nfl/nba/pro athletes is nothing new. this doesn't make it ok and it upsets me whenever a man is beating a woman. but what struck me the most is the reaction and comments of the other people reading this story.
first of all, any man who beats a woman is a bitch. in this case, he had his cousin do it. it's not clear from any of the stories that i've read whether his cousin is male or female, but in my opinion it's no different either way. they were outside of a club and so the insinuation is sharri is a woman scorned (the 2 are no longer together) and went to confront him and then he had his cousin hit her in the mouth. according to tmz, her lawsuit says that last May, when she was four months pregnant, Northcutt got his cousin to “maliciously assault, beat, strike and batter her in the face and head with great force and violence; causing severe and permanent disfugrement to her face.” now... i'm from the hood and i'm very familiar with forced abortions. either the "i'll take you and pay for it" kind or the "i'mma have someone beat you so you miscarry" kind. but to me, this looks like the ray caruth/"have that bitch killed" variety.

i'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that most of these stupid people blame the woman. what's worse is that they all just assume she must be a golddigger or a hoodrat because he's in the nfl. who the fuck is dennis northcutt? and somehow they feel that because she's a golddigger then she deserves to be beaten, and she MUST have been trying to trap him with a baby.
what do these assumptions say about us a society? and i can only assume that most of these people commenting are black so what doesn't that say about us as a culture? common said, "when we lessen our women, our condition seems to worsen," and this is evidence of that. are we the only culture that doesn't value our women? that, although we were only presented with pictures and a line about what happened, we think this man is automatically more credible than this woman and that she's not even worthy of compassion?
how could a woman look at these pictures and say that's what she gets? i mean... when i was growing up, even hood girls knew about right/wrong, just/unjust. there is a such thing a deserving a beatdown. not wanting your girl to have a baby is not reason enough to have her ass kicked. it's not even that i'm defending sharri henry. i'm saying we DON'T know all the circumstances to be saying she's a ho, she trapped him, she's a golddigger, she deserved it. why is it that black women see other black women and what to tear them down?
